GUIDED BIOFILM THERAPY

GUIDED BIOFILM THERAPY
By Dr. Devin McClintock, DDS — Precision Dentistry of Williamsburg
For many, the phrase “dental cleaning” brings to mind the familiar sensations of scraping, poking, and gritty polishing paste. While these traditional methods have been the standard for decades, advancements in dental technology are now offering a more comfortable and effective alternative — one that is transforming how we approach preventive care.
At Precision Dentistry of Williamsburg, we’re proud to offer Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) using the EMS Airflow® system — a cutting-edge approach to hygiene that emphasizes comfort, precision, and long-term oral health.
How It Works
Guided Biofilm Therapy begins with the application of a harmless disclosing solution that temporarily stains plaque and biofilm. This step allows both the clinician and the patient to clearly see where buildup exists — effectively “guiding” the cleaning process to ensure no area is overlooked.
Next, the EMS Airflow® device gently removes biofilm and surface stains using a controlled stream of warm water, air, and a fine powder. This method is not only highly effective but also provides a surprisingly gentle and refreshing experience for the patient.
Finally, any remaining hard deposits (tartar) are removed using precision ultrasonic instruments and, if needed, traditional hand tools — completing the cleaning with minimal discomfort and maximum thoroughness.
Why Patients Prefer Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)
More Comfortable
GBT replaces scraping and gritty polishing paste with a gentle stream of warm water and fine powder, offering a far more pleasant experience — especially for those with sensitive teeth or gums.
More Effective
By making biofilm visible before treatment begins, GBT allows for more thorough removal. This targeted approach promotes healthier teeth and gums, helping prevent issues before they start.
Gentle on Enamel and Restorations
The Airflow® system is safe for use around crowns, veneers, dental implants, and braces. It minimizes the risk of damage or irritation to both natural teeth and dental restorations.
Supports Overall Health
Reducing oral biofilm and inflammation helps lower bacterial load in the mouth — which research links to improved systemic health, including heart health and reduced risk of chronic disease.
Ideal for All Ages
From children with developing teeth to adults with complex dental work, GBT provides a customized, gentle, and effective cleaning experience that’s safe for everyone.
