Windows of Holidays Past in Merchants Square

11/22/2026 - 1/2/2027

Description

Step back in time this Historic Holiday season with a collaboration from The Rockefeller Library of Colonial Williamsburg, Colonial Williamsburg's Merchants Square, the Williamsburg History Non Profit, Visit Williamsburg Organization, and Miss Virginia Organization as we debut the Windows of Holidays Past in Merchants Square and The History of Williamsburg Holiday Traditions.

Start with the History of Williamsburg Holiday Traditions talk by joining staff from the John D. Rockefeller Jr. Library to learn about the history of Colonial Williamsburg's holiday traditions, including Grand Illumination, the Yule Log Ceremony, the Groaning Board, Public Times, holiday decorations, and other beloved customs.

Then experience a nostalgic journey through Williamsburg’s holiday celebrations from the 1940s to the 1970s, reimagined for today in shop windows throughout Merchants Square. Featuring archival images and stories provided by the John D. Rockefeller Jr. Library, this special display pairs historic holiday scenes with modern interpretations showcased and ready for you to view.

Help us celebrate Williamsburg History and the people who brought these programs to life by joining us at one of the 7 Rockefeller Library talks, joining Miss Virginia at The Shoe Attic on December 12th or enjoying the windows in Merchants Square this Historic Holiday Season.
